Nairobi, Kenya, November 11- A man has been arrested for allegedly facilitating exam malpractice in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams through a Telegram group. The arrest was carried out on Monday by detectives from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) in collaboration with Masaba North law enforcement, after a sustained surveillance operation.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect ran a Telegram group where he posted exam materials, offering students and parents access to KCSE papers.
During a search of his premises, detectives recovered a mobile phone and laptop that were allegedly used in the scheme. The Telegram group had over 800 members and featured messages promoting exam papers with answers, encouraging students and schools to subscribe for guaranteed high scores in exchange for payment.
The Ministry of Education has emphasized that all cheating incidents will be dealt with thoroughly. Education CS Julius Migos assured that any detected malpractice would not impact the credibility of results for students who did not participate in cheating, stressing the importance of fair and honest examinations.
This arrest comes as three KNEC-contracted agents were arraigned in Kapenguria Law Court for allegedly failing to prevent cheating during the KCSE exams.
The agents—Wilson Limakou, Sila Poriot, and Mercyline Cheruto—were arrested at a private exam center in West Pokot Sub County after reportedly allowing students to use unauthorized devices during the exams. The suspects, who were caught with devices containing exam materials on November 5, denied the charges in court and were each released on a bond of Sh10,000. Their case is set to be mentioned again on November 12, 2024.
