Nairobi, Kenya, January 8- Members of the National Assembly have been summoned for a special session on Thursday, January 16, to deliberate on critical issues, as announced by Speaker Moses Wetangula. The sitting follows a request from Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Minority Leader Junet Mohamed.
The agenda includes addressing urgent messages from the National Executive or Senate and tabling crucial reports such as:
- The mediated version of the County Governments Additional Allocations Bill (Senate Bill No. 19 of 2024).
- The Committee on Appointments’ evaluation of Cabinet Secretary nominees.
- The Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations’ review of nominees for High Commissioners, Ambassadors, Permanent Representatives, and Consul-General roles.
- The Departmental Committee on Labour’s report on nominees for the Public Service Commission (PSC).
Debates will also cover priority Bills, including the Startup Bill (Senate Bill No. 14 of 2022) and the Persons with Disabilities Bill (Senate Bill No. 7 of 2023).
Cabinet Reshuffles and Diplomatic Appointments
President William Ruto’s December 19, 2024, nominations and reshuffles will also feature in the discussions. His changes include new Cabinet Secretaries like William Kabogo (ICT), Mutahi Kagwe (Agriculture), and Lee Kinyanjui (Investment and Trade).
Key diplomatic appointments include Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u as High Commissioner to Accra, Dr. Andrew Karanja as Ambassador to Brazil, Ababu Namwamba as Permanent Representative to UNEP, and Noor Gabow as Consul-General to Port-au-Prince.
In a notable reshuffle, Ruto reassigned Kipchumba Murkomen from the Sports Ministry to Interior, replacing Kithure Kindiki, who was elevated to Deputy President. Salim Mvurya, formerly of Investments, Trade, and Industry, now heads the Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Ministry.
