Nairobi, February 12- Senator Gloria Orwoba has officially begun her suspension from Parliament following a breach of the Parliamentary code of conduct.
Her suspension from House proceedings was enforced after the Clerk and the Senate collectively decided to take disciplinary action against her misconduct. This decision came after the High Court ruled that the Senate was within its rights to take action against Orwoba for failing to respond to summons regarding harassment claims she had filed against the House.
According to court records, Orwoba alleged that she faced harassment instigated by the Clerk of the Senate and the Senate in 2023. She also claimed she was unfairly denied travel opportunities while other Senators were granted the same privileges.
However, the respondents argued that Orwoba had violated Parliamentary regulations, pointing out that she made multiple allegations on the Senate’s Business WhatsApp group and her personal WhatsApp status concerning Senate affairs.
They further stated that a disciplinary hearing had been scheduled with Orwoba in August 2023, but she refused to participate, claiming the process was biased before walking out.
Judge Lawrence Mugambi ruled that Orwoba’s failure to attend the hearings weakened her case.
Speaking in the House on Wednesday, Orwoba apologized for her actions, expressing hope that those she had offended would forgive her.
Her suspension will last from February 12 to May 1, 2025.
