Nairobi, June 13 — Grief and shock have gripped residents of a Nairobi estate following the tragic death of five-year-old Amanda Mutheu, who was allegedly thrown from a balcony by her uncle.
The horrifying incident occurred on Thursday night when the suspect, described by police as a close family member, arrived at the home in a visibly intoxicated and agitated state. Witnesses say he found young Mutheu with her nanny and quickly turned violent.
According to residents, the man attacked the nanny, wresting the child from her arms as the house help fled screaming for assistance. Before help could arrive, he reportedly threw the child from the balcony.
Estate security personnel and neighbours, responding to the nanny’s cries, rushed to the scene. They subdued the suspect and alerted the police. Enraged by what had happened, some residents assaulted the man before law enforcement officers intervened and took him into custody.
“I didn’t throw her. I love her. What I threw was a doll not Amanda,” the man claimed in a video recorded by residents, insisting CCTV footage would clear him.
Both Amanda and the suspect were rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital. The child was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit but was later pronounced dead. The suspect was treated for injuries inflicted by the mob and remains in police custody.
The suspect is currently being held at Kahawa West Police Station as investigations continue.
