Nairobi, June 23-Nairobi City Hall has temporarily removed the newly installed waste bins from the Central Business District (CBD) and other key areas in a bid to protect public property ahead of planned protests on Wednesday, June 25.
The move comes in response to recent acts of vandalism during demonstrations, where dozens of dustbins were destroyed, stolen, or set on fire. The destruction—seen most recently during protests two weeks ago—disrupted waste collection and left city streets strewn with garbage, with damages running into millions of shillings.
In some cases, protesters uprooted the bins to use as barricades or set them ablaze, forcing the county to act preemptively to avoid further losses as tensions rise ahead of the upcoming “Gen Z Protest,” which marks one year since the movement began.
The large, modern bins had only recently been rolled out as part of City Hall’s renewed effort to improve waste management and promote cleanliness in the capital. Built for both convenience and durability, they were a major investment in Nairobi’s public sanitation and environmental health.
City Hall has assured residents that the bins will be returned once the situation stabilizes and safety can be guaranteed..
