Nairobi, October 2- Former Chief Justice David Maraga has formally announced his intention to contest the presidency in 2027 on the United Green Movement (UGM) Party ticket.
Maraga was unveiled at the party’s Nairobi headquarters, where he pledged to strengthen and popularise the movement ahead of the elections. He said he chose UGM because its values align with his principles on the rule of law, respect for human rights, and democratic governance.
“I have committed to building and restoring the dignity of Kenyans as well as protecting human rights,” he stated while receiving the party’s colours at the Green Action House.
The UGM, co-led by politician Neto Agostinho, has been active since Neto broke away from the Orange Democratic Movement after serving as Ndhiwa MP between 2012 and 2017. Maraga has already been visible in party activities, including the official launch of its Kwale County office in June, and has been appealing to Gen Z supporters by positioning himself as their candidate.
He has also revealed that his campaign will rely partly on contributions from well-wishers, alongside his own funding of KSh 1–2 million. This plan has previously sparked mixed public reactions.
Maraga also addressed his recent remarks on the state of the nation, accusing President Ruto of twisting his words. He clarified that he had not called Kenya a failed state but had warned it was “sliding toward one” in light of the recent Gen Z protests.
Meanwhile, he affirmed his goal of not only clinching the presidency but also ensuring UGM secures majority seats in the next general elections.
