Nairobi, January 13- Laikipia County authorities have launched a campaign to stop motorists and motorcycle riders in Nanyuki from using vehicles fitted with excessively loud exhausts and unauthorised lighting equipment.
The Nanyuki Municipal Board announced a ban on cars and boda bodas with modified exhausts that produce sounds above 84 decibels, along with any neon, red, strobe or other non-standard lights, in an effort to cut down on noise pollution and enhance safety in the town.
The order, which took effect immediately after being issued on January 5, references various laws and regulations including the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act and the Traffic Act. It warns that those caught ignoring the directive could face fines, arrests or prosecution.
The board has shared the notice with the Deputy County Commissioner for Laikipia East, the Nanyuki Traffic Commander and municipal enforcement officers, who have been tasked with enforcing it through spot checks and inspections.
Officials said the crackdown aims to address growing complaints from residents and businesses about disruptive noise, reckless riding and intimidation by riders with modified bikes and flashy lights, particularly at night. Vehicles that are seized during enforcement will be held until they comply with the new rules.
