Nairobi, January 16- President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is leading the early count in Uganda’s 2026 presidential election as the Electoral Commission continues to compile results from across the country.
According to provisional figures based on returns from just 133 polling stations, Museveni has so far received 14,232 votes, representing about 61.7 per cent of the valid ballots tallied. His closest rival, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, has secured 7,753 votes, or approximately 33.64 per cent of the total recorded at this stage.
Other candidates lag far behind; for example, Forum for Democratic Change candidate Nandala Mafabi has obtained 560 votes (2.43 per cent), while Mugisha Muntu, Mubarak Munyagwa, Frank Bulira, Robert Kasibante and Joseph Mabirizi collectively account for the remaining share of votes counted so far.
In total, 23,049 valid votes have been recorded in this early batch of results, alongside 796 invalid ballots (around 3.34 per cent) and 37 disputed votes that the commission says will be reviewed before final declaration.
These figures reflect only 0.26 per cent of polling stations reporting and are expected to change as more results come in. The EC has said the next update will be released in the morning and that a final winner must be declared by Saturday in line with legal timelines.
