Nairobi, March 16- Several directors from The Nairobi Hospital appeared in court after spending the weekend in police custody following their arrest amid an ongoing leadership dispute at the hospital.
Among those presented before the court was senior doctor and hospital official Dr Job Obwaka, who had been arrested earlier and held at Muthaiga Police Station. His detention had sparked concern among members of the medical fraternity, with doctors’ union officials and lawyers questioning the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
In court, the officials faced multiple charges linked to alleged irregularities in the management of the Kenya Hospital Association, which runs the facility. Prosecutors claimed the directors were involved in fraudulently registering hundreds of individuals as members of the association and failing to properly file amended company documents and financial records with the Registrar as required by law.
The arrests triggered backlash from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) and the Law Society of Kenya, which both raised concerns about how the officials were apprehended and detained. The doctors’ union had earlier warned it could mobilise medics for industrial action if the matter was not addressed.
Supporters of the detained officials, including family members and activists, also gathered to demand explanations, arguing that the arrests had shocked the medical community and were linked to the ongoing leadership wrangles at the hospital.
