NAIROBI, Kenya, September 14, 2026 – The government has announced plans to pre-position relief food and medical supplies in various parts of the Eastern region ahead of the expected El Niño rains.
Eastern Regional Commissioner Jacob Muganda said the supplies will be placed at county and sub-county levels to ensure communities can quickly access assistance in case of emergencies caused by heavy rainfall.
Muganda said the government was working with county administrations and other agencies to strengthen preparedness and coordinate responses to potential floods, landslides and other weather-related disasters.
He urged residents living in areas prone to flooding and landslides to remain alert and follow weather warnings issued by authorities. Residents in high-risk locations have also been encouraged to temporarily move to safer areas whenever conditions become dangerous.
Muganda identified parts of Meru, Kilungu and Machakos as areas that could experience landslides due to their terrain, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
The commissioner also directed authorities to intensify public awareness campaigns so residents understand the risks associated with the rains and know how to respond to early warnings.
He spoke during an inspection of government development projects in Machakos County, where he also warned contractors handling government projects against unnecessary delays. Muganda said contractors who fail to complete projects within agreed timelines could face legal action.
The government has been increasing its preparedness measures as the country braces for potentially heavy rains, with authorities urging communities in vulnerable areas to take early precautions.
