Nairobi, September 23- The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has urged the National Police Service (NPS) to strengthen its policing strategies following a series of attacks and deaths involving police officers in different parts of the country.
In a statement, IPOA said the increasing number of incidents targeting officers was a concern, noting that deaths occurring while officers are on duty have consequences for both their families and wider public safety.
The authority expressed condolences to the families and colleagues of officers killed in September, including Chief Inspector Adan Isaak Somo and Constable Bethwel Kibet of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU). The two officers were reportedly ambushed and killed by armed attackers in Gotu, Isiolo County.
IPOA also reported that another ASTU officer was shot and injured during an attack in Burat Ward, Isiolo County, involving suspected livestock raiders. In a separate incident, Sergeant Gladys Nyaguthe Kirika was found dead in Kagira, Kabete, Kiambu County.
The oversight authority said the incidents highlight the need for police officers to receive adequate support and equipment while using strategies informed by evidence and established policing practices.
IPOA further noted that protecting officers is closely linked to maintaining public safety and strengthening relations between the police and communities.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to promoting professionalism, accountability, discipline, transparency and respect for human rights within the National Police Service, while encouraging stronger cooperation between police officers and members of the public.
