Nairobi, Kenya, December 6- At least 16 Tanzanian legislators traveling to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Games in Mombasa were involved in a road accident early Friday morning. The incident occurred in the Mbande area of Dodoma when their bus reportedly lost control and collided with an oncoming lorry.
Dodoma Regional Police Commander George Katabazi confirmed the accident took place around 2 a.m. He explained that the bus driver ignored a traffic alert and attempted to overtake another vehicle on a narrow road, leading to the head-on collision.
The driver has since been arrested, while the injured lawmakers were rushed to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma. Katabazi assured the public that all victims are in stable condition. He also used the opportunity to caution drivers, especially during the festive season, to prioritize passenger safety to prevent such accidents.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula confirmed that no fatalities occurred but noted that some lawmakers sustained injuries. Speaking at the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station in Nairobi, Wetangula promised further updates once the entire team reached Mombasa.
The 2024 East Africa Inter-Parliamentary Games are set to begin on Saturday, December 7, in Mombasa. Bunge Sports Club Co-Chairperson Vincent Kawaya announced that preparations were well underway, with teams warming up and fans already arriving in anticipation of the event.
