The mysterious disappearance of cartoonist Gideon Kibet, widely known as Kibet Bull, has sent shockwaves across Kenya. His family is anxiously awaiting answers after Kibet vanished shortly after his brother, Rony Kiplang’at, was also abducted. While Rony was found in Machakos County, Kibet’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Kibet’s case comes as some progress has been made in similar disappearances. Billy Mwangi and Peter Muteti, who were abducted in December, have reunited with their families. Billy walked home to Majengo, Embu, after being abandoned in Nyeri, 60 kilometers away, while Muteti, found disoriented in Nairobi’s CBD, is now recovering at home. However, the uncertainty surrounding Kibet Bull and others highlights the alarming trend of abductions and forced disappearances.

In addition to Kibet, several individuals, including Steve Mbisi, remain missing. Families fear for their loved ones’ safety as reports of enforced disappearances continue to rise. Human rights groups have linked these cases to increased tensions following public protests and government criticism.

The cases of Kibet Bull and other victims have triggered national outcry, with activists planning demonstrations on January 6 to demand accountability and justice.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja faces growing pressure to address these disappearances and has been ordered to appear in court on January 8. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mulele Ingonga, has also instructed the police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to fast-track investigations and submit findings within three days.

The DPP emphasized the state’s constitutional responsibility to protect life and ensure personal security under Articles 26 and 29. With mounting public outrage, officials are being called upon to deliver results and reassure the nation of their commitment to justice.
