Nairobi, February 4-Homa Bay MP George Kaluma has ignited controversy by calling on Kenyans to abandon circumcision, a practice deeply rooted in many communities across the country.

In Kenya, circumcision is widely performed, often as a rite of passage for young men in adolescence. Some communities mandate it, while others carry out the procedure on infants as young as nine days old.

Kaluma, however, strongly opposes the practice, likening it to male genital mutilation. “End circumcision now. Circumcision is nothing but male genital mutilation. Even donkeys don’t practice circumcision. No animals do, except for a small group of humans misled into believing they are descendants of Abraham—a man who lived in a desert without access to water!” he wrote on X.

His statement triggered a heated debate, with many weighing in on the role of tradition, personal choice, and evolving perspectives on cultural practices.
