Nairobi, June 19- Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially announced his intention to run for president in the 2027 general election, positioning himself as a challenger to President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
Speaking during a candid interview aired on NTV on Wednesday, June 19, Maraga said his decision followed deep personal reflection and concern over what he described as Kenya’s descent into lawlessness.
Maraga, known for his firm stance on judicial independence and integrity, said the upcoming election would be a defining moment for the country—a choice between restoring the rule of law or continuing down a path of impunity and corruption. “To see our young people being handled the way they have been handled is extremely worrying,” he said, referencing the recent Gen Z-led protests and the government’s forceful response.
He revealed that he had consulted widely with friends, colleagues, and concerned citizens before reaching the decision to enter the race. According to Maraga, Kenya is in urgent need of bold and principled leadership that respects constitutional values and protects the rights of all citizens.
“We can’t let some people literally throw our country to the dogs,” he said firmly. “It is as a result of that reflection that I have made up my mind—I will run in 2027 for the presidency of this country.”
Maraga’s announcement marks a rare entry of a former top judge into active politics and signals a potentially dramatic shift in the political landscape as the 2027 race begins to take shape.
