Nairobi, July 14- The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) criticizes recent political remarks about alleged election malpractice ahead of the 2027 general elections, labelling them reckless and misleading.

In a statement released on Sunday, July 13, 2025, the Commission warns that such claims, made outside the official election period, risk causing unnecessary public tension and mistrust.

“These allegations are baseless and dangerous in a democracy like ours,” the IEBC says. “We urge Kenyans to reject such statements and instead focus on building, not undermining, our democracy.”

The Commission clarifies that no elections have been announced, and the country is not currently in a campaign period. Therefore, there is no legal or constitutional basis for election-related propaganda or politically charged narratives.

While the IEBC has powers under Article 84 of the Constitution and Section 110 of the Elections Act to enforce an Electoral Code of Conduct, it stresses these powers only apply during an official election period. The Commission references a 2022 Supreme Court ruling in the Sabina Chege case, which clarified the limitations of its enforcement role outside a declared election period.

“It’s important to note that no election has been declared or gazetted, making these political statements premature and misleading,” the statement reads.

Now fully constituted, the IEBC says it will engage political leaders, parties, and other stakeholders to strengthen trust and confidence in Kenya’s electoral system.

The Commission urges political figures to avoid inflammatory speeches or actions that could undermine public faith in elections, and instead calls for cooperation in reinforcing electoral integrity.

The IEBC also reassures the public of its commitment to independence, impartiality, and to delivering free, fair, and credible elections in line with Kenyan law and international best practices.
