Nairobi, July 16- Former Chief Justice David Maraga has criticised Parliament for failing to initiate impeachment proceedings against President William Ruto.

Speaking on July 15, 2025, Maraga argued that with growing public pressure for Ruto’s removal before the 2027 elections, Parliament should have already begun the impeachment process.

Maraga, who plans to challenge Ruto in the next election, accused lawmakers of being controlled by the President, saying this was why no action had been taken.

“Parliament has the power to impeach the President. He has violated numerous sections of the Constitution,” Maraga said, adding, “If Parliament did its job, Ruto wouldn’t be in office today.”

He insisted the only legal ways for Ruto to leave office before his term ends are through resignation or impeachment, urging MPs to act if the President refuses to step down.

In Kenya, a President can be impeached for gross violation of the Constitution, criminal offences, or serious misconduct.
