Nairobi, August 18- President William Ruto has announced that Kenya is in talks to host the first African edition of the Grammy Awards in Nairobi and to set up state-of-the-art music studios.
Speaking during the 97th Kenya Music Festival State Concert in Sagana, Nyeri, on August 16, 2025, Ruto said he will meet the Recording Academy in the US next month to advance discussions. “We are moving forward with world-class studios in Kenya and laying the foundation to host the African Grammys in Nairobi,” he stated.
The President dismissed critics, assuring that the initiative will deliver tangible results. He noted that Kenya’s strong hospitality sector and track record of hosting sold-out international concerts put the country in a prime position.
If successful, the event could create thousands of jobs in logistics, hospitality, and event management while boosting local businesses. Kenya has already committed Sh500 million towards the project, with payments made last December.
The Grammys, established in 1959, remain one of the world’s most prestigious music awards. The Recording Academy is expanding into Africa and the Middle East, partnering with countries including Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and the UAE to support creators and celebrate the region’s musical heritage.
Kenya now hopes to cement its reputation as Africa’s entertainment hub by hosting the landmark event.
