Nairobi, September 25- Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested 17-year-old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf for allegedly desecrating Kenya’s national flag during a football match between Mogadishu City Club and Police FC at Nyayo Stadium.

The arrest follows the circulation of a video from September 20, 2025, showing two individuals engaging in indecent acts with the national flag.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 25, 2025, the DCI described the act as unlawful and offensive to Kenya’s values.

Citing the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act, Cap 99, the DCI noted: “Any person who shows disrespect, in speech, manner or writing, to or with reference to the National Anthem, or to any specified emblem, likeness or name, or any representation thereof, commits an offence.”

Authorities also confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the second suspect, who is believed to still be in Kenya.

The development comes just a day after Mogadishu City Club publicly apologized for the incident, following widespread outrage on social media.

In its statement, the club condemned the behaviour, stressing that it does not reflect their values.

“On behalf of Mogadishu City Club, we strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest apologies to the Government and People of Kenya. Such behaviour has no place in football or in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship that this competition represents,” the club stated.
