Nairobi, October 2- Kahiga village in Kandara, Murang’a County, witnessed an unprecedented gathering on Wednesday as thousands of mourners turned up to grieve the loss of 16 family members who died in a tragic accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

At Kahiga Catholic Church, the service drew crowds so large that many were forced to stand outside under trees, listening through loudspeakers. Local clergy and leaders led the interdenominational service as the community struggled to come to terms with the tragedy.

Nearby, a tent was filled with anguish as some relatives were informed of the deaths for the first time, their cries echoing through the village. Others, overwhelmed with grief, collapsed to the ground as they were comforted by loved ones.

During the service, it was revealed that a Sh4.2 million budget had been set aside for the burial, a cost far beyond the means of the villagers. Organisers said a joint ceremony would be held, though the deceased would be transported to their respective homes for final rites.

Of the 16 victims, five will be buried in Kahiga, one in Mairi, one in Nyeri County, three in Kangui, two in Gacharage, and three in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

Rachel contributed Sh2 million towards the burial preparations while Maina contributed Sh300,000. Kandara MP Chege Njuguna gave Sh200,000, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi Sh100,000, Maragua MP Mary Waithera Sh100,000 and nominated senator Veronica Maina Sh100,000.

Kenya Rural Roads Authority chairperson Anthony Mwaura donated Sh300,000, relieving the residents of the burden of contributing towards the burial.
