Nairobi, October 9- The Ministry of Education has directed all public and private schools to participate in a nationwide tree-planting exercise on Mazingira Day, set for Friday, October 10, 2025, under the theme “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”
Principal Secretary for Basic Education Julius Bitok said schools will serve as the main venues for the event, with each expected to plant at least 2,000 fruit trees. The initiative aims to promote environmental conservation, improve school nutrition, and strengthen alumni involvement in school-based projects.
Schools will remain open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the public holiday to facilitate the exercise. Regional and county education officials will oversee coordination and mobilization of students, parents, and community members.
The event supports the government’s goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, part of President William Ruto’s climate restoration agenda. The Ministry targets 71.14 million fruit trees across more than 35,000 schools, with seedlings supplied by the National Youth Service (NYS) at Sh150 each.
Since launching the tree-growing programme in 2022, Kenya has planted over 1.06 billion trees, though experts emphasize the need to ensure tree survival and sustainability beyond planting.
