Nairobi, October 13- The government will kick off a Sh41 billion expansion of the Port of Mombasa in December, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced on Sunday during an event in Nyali.
Kindiki said the project will boost the port’s capacity to handle the growing volume of cargo, which has increased from 1.4 million to 2 million containers over the past three years.
“The President ensured port operations were restored immediately after assuming office. Now it is time to expand the facility,” Kindiki stated, adding that President Ruto will personally launch the project.
The expansion is part of a wider development agenda for the Coast region, which includes major road upgrades such as the Nyali–Mtwapa–Kilifi highway, the Changamwe–Mariakani road, and the Dongo Kundu Bypass.
Mombasa is also benefiting from the Affordable Housing Programme, with Sh6 billion allocated for Nyali Phase 1 (2,000 units) and Sh1 billion for Phase 2 (83 units).
The government is further investing in the blue economy, including the Sh175 million Kidongo Fish Landing Site, Sh77 million Likoni Fish Market, and the Sh1.5 billion Tuna Fish Hub, alongside the ongoing Liwatoni Fish Port construction.
Kindiki affirmed the government’s commitment to resolving squatter issues, saying Sh2 billion has been set aside for land settlements.
He also praised Mombasa residents for leading in Social Health Authority (SHA) registration, with 900,000 out of 1.1 million residents already enrolled for universal health coverage.
