Nairobi, June 18- Four human rights activists who were arrested in Mombasa on Tuesday during a peaceful demonstration seeking justice for the late teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang\u2019 have been released on a cash bail of Ksh.5,000 each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The individuals detained were Francis Auma from MUHURI, Walid Sketty of Haki Afrika, Batuli Swaleh, and Mugambi Gichunge. They were taken into custody while peacefully calling for accountability over Ojwang\u2019s death and demanding the full resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lagat had earlier stated he would temporarily step aside to allow investigations into Ojwang\u2019s death who died in police custody after allegedly making defamatory remarks about him online. However, the protesters dismissed Lagat\u2019s move as inadequate, insisting he must resign entirely due to his direct involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several human rights organisations in Mombasa have slammed the arrests, calling them a clear breach of constitutional rights, particularly freedom of expression and the right to protest. They have warned of possible legal action against the officers involved and pledged to keep fighting for justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not giving up. This marks the start of a bigger fight against police brutality and the erosion of civil freedoms,\u201d said one of the activists after their release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
