Nairobi, July 8- Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has defended the police decision to erect roadblocks during the Saba Saba Day demonstrations on Monday, July 7, saying the move was necessary for public safety and the protection of property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement released later that evening, Murkomen acknowledged the disruption caused by the road closures especially around the Nairobi Central Business District but praised law enforcement for what he termed a successful effort to limit violence and looting compared to the June 25 protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhile the inconvenience caused is regrettable, the enhanced security measures were essential to safeguard lives, businesses, and property,\u201d he stated, adding that he had toured parts of Nairobi to thank officers on duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The roadblocks, which were set up early in the morning, halted access to the CBD and significantly disrupted transport and commercial activities, leaving many Kenyans unable to reach their workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Murkomen also promised swift investigations and prosecutions for those involved in acts of violence and destruction. He cited ongoing legal action against individuals arrested during the June 25 protests and assured similar accountability for those involved in the Saba Saba unrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the latest reports, at least 11 people lost their lives during Monday\u2019s demonstrations, with the National Police Service confirming that 52 officers were injured. Protests were reported in 23 out of Kenya\u2019s 47 counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
