Nairobi, September 2- The Standard Group has condemned the alleged abduction of its Associate Editor, Alex Kiprotich, who reportedly went missing on Tuesday night while travelling to Nakuru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement, the media company said Kiprotich was abducted shortly before 9:20pm along the Gilgil\u2013Nakuru road. His whereabouts remained unknown at the time of the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Standard Group said the incident was the second time Kiprotich had been targeted in two months. On June 27, armed men reportedly attempted to force him out of his vehicle as he travelled to work in Nakuru. He escaped by locking his car doors and driving away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the media house, the earlier incident occurred days after President William Ruto criticised the Group over its reporting. The company said its investigations subsequently linked the vehicle used in the attempted abduction to the National Police Service’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Standard Group said Kiprotich has been involved in reporting that has closely examined the conduct of government officials and institutions, raising concerns that his abduction could be linked to attempts to intimidate the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company has called for Kiprotich’s immediate and safe release, as well as an independent and transparent investigation into both the latest incident and the June attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has also urged authorities to provide stronger guarantees for the safety of journalists and called on organisations including the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, Law Society of Kenya and Media Council of Kenya to push for answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
