Nairobi, September 2- The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called for swift and transparent investigations into the abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, warning that failure to prosecute attacks against journalists is creating a culture of impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo urged Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to ensure those behind Kiprotich\u2019s abduction are identified and brought to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Council said it was particularly concerned that Kiprotich had previously reported a similar incident in Nakuru, but no arrests had been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MCK noted that it has documented several cases involving violations of press freedom and crimes against journalists and submitted them to police for investigation and prosecution, with limited progress in bringing perpetrators to account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Council further revealed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed police to act within 30 days on a number of cases involving attacks and violations against journalists that had been forwarded to the Inspector General.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kiprotich was found safe early Wednesday morning near Masinga Dam after being held by his alleged abductors for several hours. The Standard Group has called for independent investigations into the incident, as well as a previous attempt to abduct the editor in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MCK also raised concern over the increasing online targeting, profiling and trolling of journalists and editors from various media organisations, saying such threats undermine press freedom and the public\u2019s constitutional right to access information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Council stressed that the State has a responsibility to protect journalists from intimidation and harassment, warning that continued attacks against media practitioners pose a wider threat to democracy and freedom of expression in Kenya.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
