Nairobi, September 8- Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing\u2019oei has apologised to Burundian nationals living in Kenya following reports of harassment linked to recent government directives targeting unlicensed foreign traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking during a visit to the Burundi Embassy in Nairobi on September 7, Sing\u2019oei said the government regretted the confusion that followed the directive and assured Burundians that they would receive government support to obtain proper documentation or voluntarily return home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PS explained that the directive requiring foreigners running small businesses without licences to leave the country had been misunderstood, resulting in some Burundian nationals facing ridicule and hostility from members of the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sing\u2019oei stressed that Kenya\u2019s intention was not to target East Africans but to ensure foreign nationals living and doing business in the country were properly documented and able to operate securely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the government would work to establish where foreign nationals live, ensure their safety and help them acquire the necessary identification documents. Businesses operated by Burundian nationals would also be documented as part of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
