Nairobi, September 21- Families searching for relatives who died in the Shakahola tragedy have been given 21 days to come forward and identify and collect their loved ones\u2019 remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kilifi County says 443 bodies and body parts recovered from Shakahola Forest are still being held at a temporary morgue at Malindi Sub-County Hospital. The county plans to bury the unclaimed remains by December if families do not come forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kilifi Health Executive Peter Mwarogo said investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) into the remains have been completed, paving the way for the county to begin the burial process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So far, only 14 of the 443 remains have been identified by relatives through DNA matching. Mwarogo said some families who had successfully identified their relatives had nevertheless declined to collect the bodies because of the stigma surrounding the tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The county has published a Gazette notice giving families 21 days to make claims. If the deadline passes without the remains being collected, Kilifi County plans to seek a court order allowing it to proceed with the burial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Senators, however, urged the county to publicise the notice more widely through television, newspapers and social media to reach families who may still be searching for their missing relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
