Nairobi, October 8- Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has attributed persistent banditry and cattle rustling in parts of northern Kenya to marginalisation and underdevelopment.

Appearing before the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security, Murkomen said security operations alone would not permanently address the problem.

He identified poor roads, inadequate schools, limited access to water and weak communication networks among the challenges affecting communities in banditry-prone areas.

According to the CS, the lack of development has created conditions that allow insecurity to persist in parts of Samburu, Isiolo and Turkana counties.

Murkomen said the government was pursuing development projects in affected areas while security agencies continue with intelligence-led operations to recover stolen livestock, recover illegal firearms and arrest suspected perpetrators.

He said addressing the underlying development challenges would be critical in achieving lasting peace in the region.
