Nairobi, Kenya, November 12- President Ruto is reportedly planning a significant shake-up in the National Assembly, targeting committee chairpersons and vice-chairpersons whose loyalty is in doubt. Among those facing potential removal is Ndindi Nyoro, the influential chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee and a second-term MP for Kiharu.
Sources indicate that the President is under pressure to reward allies instrumental in the recent impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This reshuffle, expected as early as December before the Christmas recess, aims to secure Ruto’s agenda by replacing unsteady committee leaders with trusted supporters.
Concerns have arisen within Ruto’s circle over the risk of an alliance between Gachagua and opposition figures, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, which could undermine Ruto’s plans. Despite Ruto’s cooperation with Raila Odinga’s ODM, there is nervousness about a political realignment in Gachagua’s Central Kenya stronghold that might weaken Ruto’s influence.
Nyoro’s position has become tenuous after he skipped crucial National Assembly votes, including on Gachagua’s impeachment and the approval of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. Ruto’s allies argue that Nyoro’s leadership of the budget committee is untenable if his loyalty remains uncertain, urging his immediate replacement.
