Nairobi, Kenya, November 21- Ezekiel Mutua, CEO of the Kenya Film Classification Board, has expressed concern over the growing popularity of the “Mapangale” dance challenge on TikTok, which has taken the country by storm.
In a social media post, Mutua revealed that he has been flooded with complaints about the dance, which involves dancers mimicking the act of chopping with a machete, or “panga.” After reviewing the clips, he acknowledged that such content normalizes violence and perpetuates misogynistic themes.
“I am liaising with the relevant authorities, particularly the Ministry of Interior, to ensure that such content does not jeopardize national security,” Mutua said. He emphasized that content creators should channel their creativity towards promoting positive messages and not glorify criminal behavior. “We shall issue a comprehensive statement on the matter once we have aligned our corrective actions with the relevant parties,” he added.
The “Mapangale” dance, originating from the streets of Eastlands, quickly made its way to TikTok, where it gained immense popularity. The dance involves two dancers facing each other, performing rhythmic movements while simulating a machete attack. It can also be done solo, with the dancer mimicking the act of chopping themselves. The track accompanying the dance, created by Reggae MC Zendiambo, has fueled its virality, with popular influencers like Kabuda, Mulamwah, Terence Creative, and DJ Shiti joining the challenge.
While some see it as a harmless form of expression, the dance has raised serious concerns. Critics point out that it comes at a time when Kenya is grappling with femicide and other violent crimes, with many fearing that the dance could trivialize violence and send the wrong message to youth. The dance’s connection to machete-related crimes has made some Kenyans uneasy, with some questioning the appropriateness of celebrating such a violent act, even in a playful context.
Despite the controversy, the “Mapangale” dance continues to dominate TikTok and the Kenyan social scene. As authorities review the matter, it remains to be seen whether the dance will be allowed to continue, or if further actions will be taken to curb its spread.
