Nairobi, March 10- Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has suspended all mining operations in Jaribuni, Kauma Sub County, Kilifi, following residents’ protests over health hazards. Speaking at a meeting with mining investors at the Kilifi Governor’s residence, Joho also demanded full disclosure of mining revenues and insisted that firms allocate 1% of their gross earnings to community projects.

Mining companies have been accused of environmental pollution, failing to remit royalties, and neglecting road maintenance, worsening health risks. Joho warned that operations would remain suspended until firms comply with mining laws and sign cooperation agreements with residents.

Efforts by mining spokesperson Khalif Yasir Khan to negotiate were unsuccessful, though companies pledged to begin road repairs.

The directive follows growing complaints from Kilifi residents about air pollution and related health issues. Governor Gideon Mung’aro, present at the meeting, urged firms to prioritize community safety.

Earlier this week, hundreds of Jaribuni residents blocked roads to mining sites in protest. Youth leader Khamisi Mwarabu highlighted the dangers of toxic dust and explosives, linking them to illnesses and building collapses.

With the government stepping in, mining firms must now meet regulations before resuming operations.
