Nairobi, March 10- National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on Members of Parliament to prioritize transparency and integrity in selecting new Commissioners for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking at a church service in Mokwo Parish, Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County, on Sunday, March 9, 2025, Wetang’ula emphasized the critical role of Parliament in shaping Kenya’s electoral system. He urged lawmakers to set aside political interests and focus on choosing competent and independent individuals who will uphold the country’s democratic values.

The Speaker reminded MPs that the Selection Panel had already released a long list of candidates. It was now their duty to ensure that the final appointees maintain Kenya’s electoral integrity and prevent political instability.

“You, as MPs, are responsible for selecting the new IEBC team. Please identify individuals who are principled, law-abiding, and committed to the Constitution,” he stated.

Beyond electoral matters, Wetang’ula reiterated his full support for President William Ruto’s leadership, calling on politicians from all sides to prioritize national unity and development. He cautioned that divisive politics only serves to hinder the country’s progress.

“We fully back our President in his efforts to bring people together. In our country, we engage in competitive politics, but when elections are over, we must accept the results and move forward,” he said.
Additionally, the Speaker underscored the importance of mentoring young leaders. He shared a personal example of prioritizing an invitation from a young politician, Hon. Kimaiyo, over attending a high-profile event with the President.

“As elders, we must uplift the younger generation rather than suppress them. If I had turned down his invitation, I don’t know what he would have said here today,” Wetang’ula remarked, reinforcing the need for inclusivity in leadership.

Addressing recent political developments, including a meeting between President Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, Wetang’ula clarified that strategic decisions within their political camp are made collectively. He emphasized the importance of teamwork in leadership, comparing the decision-making process to that of a well-structured institution.

“In our team, the leadership committee is the one that decides on such major issues. That committee is like the ‘Pope of Rome,’” he stated, signifying a structured and deliberate approach to governance.
Wetang’ula’s remarks highlighted the importance of integrity in electoral processes, national cohesion, and the mentorship of young leaders, all of which he believes are key to Kenya’s political stability and development.
