Nairobi, March 10- Police have arrested a man accused of tearing Kenyan banknotes and sharing videos of the act on TikTok. Detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit tracked down the suspect after the clips circulated online, showing him damaging the currency. He is currently in police custody and is expected to be taken to court as investigations continue.

Authorities say intentionally damaging money is illegal in Kenya because it interferes with the circulation of currency. The law prohibits acts such as tearing, burning or defacing bank notes since they become unfit for use once destroyed.

The Central Bank of Kenya has previously warned the public against misusing banknotes for social media content, decorations, or celebrations. According to the bank, currency should be kept in good condition so it can continue serving as a reliable means of exchange.

Officials also explained that damaged notes can only be replaced if the damage was accidental and certain conditions are met. However, notes that are deliberately destroyed may not be exchanged or refunded.
