Nairobi, September 8- Former Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kaberia and nine other individuals are facing corruption charges over the alleged loss of KSh330 million set aside for Kenya’s preparations to host the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested six former sports officials and contractors after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga, approved charges against them and four businessmen. Five companies have also been charged in connection with the alleged financial misconduct.
The suspects face charges including abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, violation of procurement laws, acquisition of proceeds of crime and financial misconduct.
The six arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court at Milimani in Nairobi, while four others, including a former Football Kenya Federation audit committee member, have been ordered to report to EACC offices.
The case relates to a KSh1.5 billion contract awarded in 2017 for the installation of security systems, stadium lighting and audio-visual equipment ahead of CHAN 2018. Investigators found that the tender was single-sourced, lacked the required bidding security and bypassed procurement procedures.
EACC further established that although KSh330 million was paid under the contract, the contracted works were never carried out, supervised or completed. The anti-graft agency had previously filed a civil case seeking to recover the funds.
