Nairobi, September 25- The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intercepted suspected narcotics valued at Sh25.45 million at Eldoret International Airport.
The consignment, shipped from Dubai and headed for Mombasa, had been declared as cosmetics. It contained 141 items packed in soap-like blocks, gel containers and powders.
KRA Customs officers flagged the shipment after an X-ray scan showed images that did not match the declared contents. A physical inspection also revealed gaps in the shipment’s documentation and limited verifiable details about the sender and recipient.
Samples tested at the Government Chemist Laboratory in Kisumu found that 13 blue blocks contained methamphetamine, valued at an estimated Sh11.05 million, while 14 maroon gel containers contained amphetamine worth about Sh14.41 million.
Most of the other packages tested negative for narcotic or psychotropic substances.
The consignment was handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Anti-Narcotics Unit for further investigation. The probe later led to the arrest of a suspect in Mombasa.
KRA said it will continue working with other agencies and using scanning technology and intelligence-led targeting to curb the trafficking of illicit substances.
