Nairobi, October 15- University lecturers are set to stage demonstrations in Nairobi on Thursday, October 15, as the nationwide strike enters its second week amid a stalemate in negotiations with the government.
The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) called for the protests to push for the full implementation of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which covers lecturers’ salaries and working conditions.
The strike began on October 2 after a seven-day strike notice expired, with lecturers demanding a binding agreement on the outstanding employment issues.
The union has rejected the government’s KSh 12 billion counter-offer, terming it inadequate and accusing the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) of frustrating the negotiations.
Lecturers are also demanding payment of KSh 7.9 billion in salary arrears arising from previous collective bargaining agreements, including the 2017–2021 deal. They want the government and the National Treasury to provide a firm financial commitment to support the new agreement.
Efforts to resolve the dispute failed on October 12 after talks involving UASU, the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) and the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum collapsed without an agreement.
