Nairobi, Kenya, October 30- Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale recently claimed that a coup attempt against President William Ruto’s administration had been set for June 25, during the peak of the Gen Z protests, which saw young Kenyans storm and partially burn a section of Parliament.

Speaking on JKLive on Citizen TV, Duale described the regime change plot as serious, though he refrained from directly naming former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, citing the Cabinet’s oath of collective responsibility. However, he suggested Gachagua’s involvement by referencing national security issues listed among the impeachment charges against him.

Duale also criticized Gachagua for his public attacks on key security agencies, particularly the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and its Director, Noordin Haji, noting that certain institutions like the NIS, Kenya Defense Forces, and the Judiciary should not be publicly discredited.

Gachagua’s criticism of the NIS came to a head on June 27 when he accused the agency of failing to warn President Ruto about public opposition to the Finance Bill. This led to widespread protests and the storming of Parliament on June 25, prompting President Ruto to withdraw the bill. Gachagua’s impeachment motion later cited this incident, listing “gross misconduct” and his attacks on the NIS among other security-related violations as grounds for his removal.
