Nairobi, Kenya, January 7- A group of legislators has called for an independent public commission to investigate a recent spate of abductions targeting critics of President William Ruto’s administration.

Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday, six senators and 19 MPs decried the abductions, politicisation of security agencies, resurgence of criminal gangs, and alleged state capture, saying these issues threaten citizens’ safety and democratic rights.

Kajiado Senator Seki Lenku Ole Kanar, representing the group, demanded a transparent investigation into the abductions and security agencies’ alleged misuse to silence dissent. The lawmakers also urged the National Assembly, Senate, and county assemblies to hold special sessions during recess to address the crisis.

“We approach this cautiously as police deny involvement, yet their actions show partiality and allegiance to the executive,” they said.

The group also called on President Ruto to ensure the immediate release of remaining abductees and investigate organised attacks on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s supporters, including violent disruptions in Limuru and Nyandarua.

Additionally, they demanded action on alleged state-sponsored criminal gangs and cases of corruption, land grabbing, and misuse of public resources linked to government affiliates.

“The time for transparent and accountable governance is now,” Ole Kanar concluded.

The team comprises senators Ole Kanar, Karungo wa Thang’wa (Kiambu), Joe Nyutu (Murang’a), John Methu (Nyandarua), James Murango (Kirinyaga) and John Kinyua of Laikipia.

It also consists of MPs Onesmus Ngogoyo (Kajiado North), John Kaguchia (Mukurwe-ini), Wanjiku Muhia (Kipipiri), Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri), James Gakuya (Embakasi North), Edward Muriu (Gatanga), Peter Kihungi (Kangema), Jane Kihara (Naivasha), Njeri Maina (Kirinyaga) and Samuel Gachobe of Subukia.

Others are George Koimburi (Juja), MejjaDonK Gathiru (Embakasi Central), Joseph Munyoro (Kigumo), Mary Wamaua (Maragua), Mwago Amos (Starehe), Gitonga Mukunji (Manyatta), Geoffrey Wandeto (Tetu), Samuel Parachina (Kajiado South) and nominated MP Teresia Wanjiru.
