Nairobi, Kenya, November 20 – In a strong move to combat femicide and gender-based violence, President William Ruto has allocated Ksh.100 million for the Safe Home, Safe Space Campaign. This initiative, which aims to address the alarming rise in femicide cases, will kick off on November 25, 2024, and span 16 days of activism dedicated to raising awareness and fighting against gender-based violence.
Speaking at State House after meeting with women leaders, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling this issue through supportive policies, especially in the wake of recent troubling incidents. These have included the discovery of women’s bodies in dump sites and deadly marital disputes that have turned fatal.
“Psychological support and safe spaces for women and children are a priority in my office. Through the women’s rights advisor, we are launching the Safe Home, Safe Space campaign during the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence starting November 25,” he stated.
The President also called for greater community awareness about the signs of abuse and the resources available to victims. He highlighted the increasing dangers posed by social media, where women are increasingly targeted by criminals, urging caution in online interactions.
“Social media has become a dangerous platform for exploitation, and I urge our young people to approach strangers on these platforms with the utmost caution. Parents, schools, churches, and community organizations must help guide and equip our youth,” he added.
Additionally, the President directed law enforcement to act swiftly in bringing perpetrators to justice. He announced that gender-based violence desks would be strengthened across institutions, including in police stations and hospitals, to ensure that victims receive immediate assistance.
“I have instructed the criminal justice system to take prompt action and hold perpetrators fully accountable. We will enhance gender desks in police stations and introduce them in hospitals to ensure timely support for victims,” he emphasized.
The President concluded by urging all Kenyans to actively participate in the campaign and stressed the vital role of parents in protecting their children. “As a parent of four girls, I urge every Kenyan to join this movement. A strong family is the first line of defense against the dangers in society. Be present and approachable to your children,” he said.
