Nairobi, March 3- The late Wafula Chebukati, former IEBC Chairperson, will be buried on Saturday, March 8, at his Sabata home in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County. He passed away on February 21 after battling illness for over a year.
His widow, Mary Wanyonyi, described him as a peaceful and respectful man, urging people to honor his memory in the same way.
A requiem mass will be held on March 5 at CITAM Karen, followed by a memorial service at his home on March 7. Speaker Moses Wetang’ula assured the government’s support for a dignified send-off.
Chebukati leaves behind his wife and three children. He was diagnosed with brain cancer, undergoing multiple surgeries in Germany. Despite treatment, the tumor recurred in 2024. He was admitted to ICU on February 12, suffered a cardiac arrest on February 20, and passed away the next day.
His family dismissed social media rumors about his health and confirmed a post-mortem will be conducted before burial.
Born in 1961, Chebukati studied at St. Peter’s Mumias Boys, Lenana School, and the University of Nairobi, later earning an MBA from JKUAT. He served as IEBC Chair for six years, overseeing Kenya’s 2017 and 2022 elections before retiring in 2023.
