Nairobi, June 26- Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has criticised the June 25 protests, describing them as disorganised, violent, and lacking clear purpose. In a strongly worded statement, Nyamu said she initially believed the demonstrations were meant to peacefully honour those who lost their lives during last year’s protests on the same date—but was disappointed by how events unfolded.
“I thought it was a memorial to remember those who were killed last year,” she wrote. “But it turned into violence, threats, and mob tension. Why? What did you want to achieve?”
Nyamu questioned the intention behind the protests, suggesting they lacked the clarity and focus seen during the 2024 demonstrations. “Last year, the cause was loud and clear. This time, it was the first protest I’ve seen without a cause,” she added.
She also raised concerns about the authenticity of the protestors, wondering if they were acting on their own or being influenced by hidden agendas. Nyamu lamented the destruction of businesses—many of which, she noted, are owned by hardworking members of the Kikuyu community.
Without naming him directly, Nyamu appeared to take a jab at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, often seen as a spokesperson for the Mt Kenya region. “Where is the self-appointed Kikuyu spokesperson to condemn the destruction?” she posed.
Warning against following leaders “who have nothing left to lose,” Nyamu likened their influence to that of someone who would rather destroy everything than let others lead. “The devil will be defeated completely,” she concluded.
