Nairobi, September 8- St. George’s Girls Secondary School in Nairobi has been shut down indefinitely following a Sunday night standoff between students and teachers.
The unrest began around 9:30 pm after a reported altercation between a teacher and a Form Three student, who allegedly sustained a jaw injury. At the time, students had gathered outside to observe the “blood moon” during the solar eclipse.
The incident sparked anger, with more than 1,800 students forcing down the school gate, marching onto Dennis Pritt Road, and later staging a protest at the nearby Royal Media Services offices. Police intervened around midnight, escorting the learners back, though they refused to return to their dormitories.
By Monday morning, education and government officials, including Dagoretti North Subcounty Commissioner and Kilimani OCPD Patricia Yegon, attempted to calm the situation. At 10 am, the school administration announced an indefinite closure, giving students 20 minutes to vacate as parents arrived to pick them up.
Authorities are expected to investigate both the alleged assault and the destruction of property during the protest, amid rising concern over student unrest in schools.
