Nairobi, September 30- A family is in mourning after 16 of its members were killed in a devastating road accident at Kariandusi near Gilgil, along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The Sunday, September 28 tragedy occurred when a matatu carrying the family collided head-on with a trailer. Among those who died were family patriarch Elijah Mburu, his wife, four daughters, grandchildren, and several close relatives.

The group was travelling to Rongai, Nakuru, for a family meeting. The matatu driver, who also died in the crash, was Mburu’s grandchild. Relatives had been picked up from different locations, including Nairobi, Murang’a, and Naivasha, before the fatal journey.

CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station captured the two vehicles speeding before the impact at 12:05 p.m. The matatu was left mangled on impact, while the trailer veered off the road and overturned into a ditch.

Sixteen people were confirmed dead, while others who were rushed to a Nakuru hospital for treatment later succumbed to their injuries. Residents nearby rushed to the scene to assist, as vehicle debris and personal belongings were scattered across the highway.

The crash caused heavy traffic in the Kikopey area as police and rescue teams worked for hours to clear the wreckage on Sunday afternoon.
