Nairobi, October 15- Raila Amolo Odinga will be remembered as one of Kenya’s most influential political figures a man whose name became synonymous with resilience, reform, and the unyielding pursuit of justice.

Born on January 7, 1945, in Maseno, Kisumu County, Raila was the son of Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. He was educated both locally and abroad, earning an engineering degree from the Technical University of Magdeburg in East Germany.

Raila’s life was defined by his courage and his role in shaping Kenya’s democratic journey. He was imprisoned for several years in the 1980s for opposing one-party rule under President Daniel Arap Moi a period that cemented his reputation as a fearless defender of freedom.

He later became a key architect of Kenya’s multi-party democracy, a reform champion, and a tireless advocate for constitutional change. His efforts culminated in the 2010 Constitution, which redefined Kenya’s governance structure.

Raila served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013 under the Grand Coalition Government, following the disputed 2007 election. His leadership during that turbulent time was marked by calls for national unity and reconciliation.

Throughout his career, Raila inspired generations with his unwavering belief in “the people’s power.” Whether loved or opposed politically, few could deny his charisma, intellect, and enduring influence on the nation’s political landscape.

Beyond politics, he was a family man husband to Ida Odinga and father to four children known for his warmth, wit, and deep love for his community and country.
