Nairobi, October 28- A heavy downpour that began early Tuesday morning left large parts of Ukunda and Diani flooded, bringing transport and business activity to a near standstill.
The rains, which started around 1 a.m. and intensified through the morning, turned major roads into streams, submerging sections of the Ukunda–Lungalunga and Diani–Ukunda routes. Motorists, tuk-tuk operators, and matatu drivers struggled to navigate through rising water levels, with several vehicles stalling along the way.
Pedestrians waded through the flooded streets or sought shelter under verandas and shopfronts, many of which were partially submerged. Public transport was severely affected, with long travel delays and reduced passenger numbers as residents opted to remain indoors.
Drivers reported taking twice as long to reach town, with smaller vehicles at risk of getting stuck in deep pools of water. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution as weather forecasts predict continued rainfall in the coming days.
The heavy downpour is among the most intense recorded in the coastal region this month.
