Nairobi, November 19- Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has issued a strong warning against gender-based violence (GBV), urging survivors to prioritize their safety even if it means leaving an abusive partner.

He cautioned, “It is better to have a divorce decree in your house than a eulogy booklet or death certificate for your daughter or son.”

Sonko highlighted the case of Mumbi Kanyaga, who allegedly died after being attacked by her boyfriend, as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of domestic abuse. He said the growing number of reports from survivors and their families is alarming, calling on government agencies, civil society organizations, and communities to work together to protect women and girls.

Sharing a personal experience, Sonko recounted confronting his son-in-law after his daughter was assaulted, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, patience, and understanding in relationships rather than violence. He urged survivors to seek help, document incidents, and speak out, stressing that no one should suffer in silence.

He concluded with a plea for safe and loving homes, where conflicts are resolved peacefully and abuse has no place, reinforcing the urgent need for awareness and accountability in tackling GBV.
