MOMBASA, Kenya, September 14, 2026 – Two people have died after a passenger boat capsized in Tudor Creek, prompting the County government to order the immediate inspection of all passenger vessels operating along the Coast.
The boat capsized on Saturday evening after encountering strong waves. Five people were rescued, while the bodies of the two missing passengers were later recovered near Nyali Beach.
Following the incident, Governor Nassir directed the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) to conduct rigorous inspections to establish whether passenger and recreational boats meet required safety and seaworthiness standards.
The inspections will assess vessels’ general condition, maintenance, safety equipment and compliance with maritime regulations.
Nassir urged boat operators to monitor weather conditions before setting out and ensure all passengers wear life jackets throughout their journeys. He emphasised that commercial and recreational activities should not take precedence over public safety.
The governor also visited Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He commended the County Marine Rescue Unit, Beach Management Unit lifeguards, Kenya Coast Guard Service and other responders involved in the rescue operation.
The directive is intended to strengthen maritime safety oversight and prevent similar boat capsizing incidents along the Kenyan coastline.
