Nairobi, September 17- A matatu driver linked to dangerous “manyoka” stunts has been charged over a crash along Enterprise Road in Nairobi that allegedly killed three passengers and injured two others.
Sammy Murigi Maina appeared before Milimani Magistrate Peter Mutai on Thursday and denied the charges. According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred at around 8pm near the Dar es Salaam Roundabout, opposite KCB Bank, when the Isuzu minibus allegedly lost control while negotiating a roundabout, hit a kerb and overturned.
The deceased passengers were identified as Edwin Kago, Charles Brandy Wahome and Tamia Kalekye Nyambura. Maina faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, causing bodily harm and driving without due care and attention.
The prosecution also alleges that the matatu had several safety defects, including an obstructed emergency exit, reduced passenger headroom, raised rear seats and equipment installed inside the driver’s cabin.
Maina, who was reportedly arrested in Malindi after nearly two months on the run, remains in custody pending a pre-bail report. The court is expected to rule on his bail application on September 24, 2026.
