Nairobi, October 8- The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has intensified its crackdown on banned plastic bags, seizing 90,695 plastic carrier and flat bags during an operation in Nairobi.

Five people were arrested during the raid conducted at a facility in Njiru, where the banned plastic bags were recovered.

The suspects are expected to face charges relating to the manufacture, storage or use of prohibited plastic bags.

NEMA said the operation forms part of its ongoing nationwide enforcement campaign aimed at ensuring compliance with Kenya’s ban on plastic carrier and flat bags.

The authority has warned traders and manufacturers against dealing in the banned products, saying enforcement operations will continue across the country.

Those arrested are expected to be presented in court as investigations into the source and intended distribution of the plastic bags continue.
